With over 40 years of instructional experience, Sobhan Karate Academy currently operates across two locations in Dhaka. Our diverse student body ranges in age from 5 to 85, and we are proud that women make up over 60% of our enrollment.
Sobhan Karate Academy is a registered member of the Japan Karate Association (JKA), which operates under the Japanese Ministry of Education. Under the JKA's guidance, our dojo trains students in the martial arts, helping them build a firm foundation to confidently navigate society and overcome stereotypical mindsets. The academy is currently run by sensei Md. Ibrahim Hassan, the able son of judo-karate Grandmaster Abdus Sobhan. Md. Ibrahim Hassan is a karate black belt 2nd dan, trained in Japan, West Indies, and Brazil.
We train and motivate students for their overall growth in skills, and physical and mental stability. A dojo (karate classroom) is a place that commands focus, respect, and honor. Traditionally, students of all ages must show honor to their instructor as well as other classmates. Our classroom atmosphere exhibits honor, confidence, and prompt obedience that the students catch quickly. Our parents have noted an increased level of compliance at home after their child began practicing the martial art. We, at Sobhan Karate Academy, teach and practice the art of Shotokan Karate style. It was developed by Grandmaster Gichin Funakoshi in 1928 in Okinawa, Japan. In Japanese, shōtō means “pine waves”, the movement of pine needles when the wind blows through them, and kan means “house” or “hall”. The name was established by Funakoshi’s students who created a sign reading shōtō-kan and placed it above the entrance of the hall where Funakoshi taught.
Sobhan Karate Academy offers a range of courses depending on the type of recruits. Besides the students, we also cater to working professionals to build their body, mind, and lifestyle.
